Mo.Na Project - Third mission in the coastal underwater ecosystems in Nessebar

Jan 12, 2021

Our late autumn Mo.Na field survey of the coastal underwater ecosystems around Nessebar peninsula allowed us to get a glimpse into the biodiversity of this region of the Bulgarian Black Sea.

Inhabited by humans since ancient times, the coastal zone around Nessebar offers a unique opportunity for divers to see most of the typical Black Sea marine plants and animals in the same locations where submerged underwater artefacts and ancient city walls are also present.

By the end of summer, the Cystoseira brown algae canopies regain their strength and grow back to their full size and biomass by November, attracting schools of playful wrasses and various invertebrates.
