SFEDA Project - Regional Bulgarian-Romanian Seminar

On 22-nd January 2020, the University of Ruse hosted a regional Bulgarian-Romanian seminar on the implementation of Horizon Europe - the future framework program of the European Union for research and innovation in the period 2021-2027. The organizers of the event were the European Commission, the Ministry of Education and Science of Bulgaria and the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania.

The forum was officially opened by Corresponding Member. Prof. Ph.D. Hristo Beloev - Rector of the University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev. Mrs. Maria Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, addressed the seminar. The event was also attended by Mrs. Karina Angelieva (Deputy Minister of Education and Science), Advisors to the Minister of Education and Science Prof. Ivan Dimov and Prof. Kostadin Kostadinov, representatives of the Romanian Government and more than 250 representatives of various scientific and educational organizations.

During the event, many of the guests visited the laboratories of the University and got acquainted with the research and educational processes taking place in them. The Department of Telecommunications also showed and demonstrated many of the activities that the lecturers and doctoral students are engaged in, as well as some specialized equipment.

In front of a large audience the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their infrared and thermal cameras, including the unique for Eastern Europe UAV with fixed wing and vertical takeoff - ALTi Transition F were demonstrated. In the recent months a prototype system for early detection of forest fires, which uses streaming video information from drones, was developed based on this equipment. The developed system is based on a neural network and an artificial intelligence system, by which the video is analyzed in real time and the ground station is informed about the presence of fire or smoke and its geographical coordinates. These activities are implemented under SFEDA Project (SFEDA Balkan-Mediterranean).
