More than 15 keynote speakers and 200 participants joined the international online conference «Towards nearly zero energy hospitals» of ZenH Balkan Project within the Transnational Cooperation Programme "INTERREG Balkan Mediterranean 2014-2020"

More than 200 people from the public and private health sector, the academic and scientific community, independent researchers, engineers and students attended the International On-Line Conference entitled “Towards nearly zero energy hospitals” that was organized by the Laboratory of Environmental and Energy Design of Buildings and Settlements, Department of Environmental Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, on Friday 19th March 2021 between 10.00 a.m.-04.30 p.m. (Greek time), via ZOOM platform.

In the opening of the conference, Prof. Argiro Dimoudi, ZenH Balkan Project Coordinator, welcomed all the speakers and participants; while immediately after, introduction speeches were also made by

- the President of the Department of Environmental Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace, Assoc. Prof. Spyridon Ntougias, 
- the Coordinator of the Joint Secretariat of the Transnational Cooperation Programme "INTERREG Balkan Mediterranean 2014-2020", Dr. Themistoklis Chatzikonstantinou and 
- the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Energy in Albania Mr Gjergji Simaku.

During the conference, more than 15 keynote speakers from Democritus University of Thrace, Technical University of Crete, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, The Cyprus Institute and Milano Politecnico, as well as experts from the partner countries - Greece, Bulgaria, the Republic of North Macedonia, Albania and Cyprus - presented and highlighted topics related to the creation of zero or nearly zero energy hospital buildings. Also, Prof. Matthaios Santamouris, Professor of High-Performance Architecture, University of New South Wales, Australia, participated as Invited Speaker.

Finally, within the second part of the project conference executive staff members and experts of the partner organisations presented the activities performed and the outcomes of the project ZenH Balkan in the partner countries - Greece, Bulgaria, the Republic of North Macedonia, Albania and Cyprus.

The conference was organised within the project ZenH Balkan «Towards zero energy hospitals in the Balkan Region», in the framework of the Transnational Cooperation Programme Interreg V-B "Balkan - Mediterranean", co-funded by the European Union and national funds of the participating countries. The project is being coordinated by the Laboratory of Environmental and Energy Design of Buildings and Settlements, Department of Environmental Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, with the scientific responsibility of Prof. Argiro Dimoudi, Director of the Laboratory.
