Project idea title Balkan Chamois Network (BC-Net)
Specific problem to be addressed Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) is a rare mammal sub-species endemic in the Balkan peninsulla. It forms small isolated populations through several high mountains in the Balkan territory. More or less it faces the same threats in all the Balkan countries. The intensive poaching is the main threat for the species. Almost all the isolated populations suffer a lot of poaching, especially the ones which are at the border lines between the Balkan countries. There are at least three Balkan chamois populations which share their habitat between Greece and Bulagria or FYROM or Albania.
Main project activities planned The project aims to help the small Balkan chamois population to increase both their range and populations and reach the carrying capacity of their habitats, through the particiation of the local communities and the establishment of an active observatory of citizens (hikers, naturalista etc).
State you area of expertise/ interest Balkan Chamois Society (Αγριόγιδο στα βουνά) is a non profit organization established in 2007 for the protection and sustainable management of the populations of the species Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica).
