PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The MoNa project aims to record, analyze and evaluate the protection and promotion of natural resources and cultural heritage across the Balkan-Mediterranean territory choosing as a main subject the integrated planning and the common management strategies in environments of high interest and preservation value (Natura 2000, Ramsar areas etc.) in interdependence with regions with a high cultural importance (UNESCO protected areas etc.)
Its goal is to develop common tools and management practices; therefore, it is expected to add value to the participating regions which are considered at national level as places of high natural and cultural interest (Santorini/Greece, Nessebar/Bulgaria, Bultrint/Albania, Kykkos Forest/Cyprus) but also to other regions of natural and cultural heritage that are affected either by local/multi-level pressures or by climate change.
More specifically, MoNa focuses on the development of a network of competent bodies from the Mediterranean and the Balkans that will undertake initiatives:
-To promote the need for an integrated management of regions of particular cultural–environmental interest (protected by both UNESCO, Natura 2000 etc);
-To determine the necessary policies and tools in order to halt the landscape alteration and provide joint protection based on environmental and cultural criteria;
-To examine case studies for 4 pilot regions (Butrint in Albania,Nesebar in Bulgaria,Santorini caldera in Greece and Kykkos Forest in Cyprus) that are affected by human and climate change–related pressure and promote good practices,capitalize,conclusions etc;
-To address jointly the land and the marine zone through a study of the protected regions (habitat mapping) based on common criteria;
-To develop actions to protect endangered species;
-To assist local communities in order to make clear their potential and contribution to local development;
-To inform and raise awareness of the local, national and international communities aiming at different(from a thematic and age point of view)target groups in a distinctive way;
-To strengthen the links of archaeological /cultural tourism combined with tourism in natural sites;
-To develop a new management model to promote and at the same time protect the cultural and natural resources through the new tool: “Brand for the promotion and protection of natural and cultural environment”, which shall be a main ‘result’ of MoNa project.
ΜοΝΑ connects effectively the Balkan space (Bulgaria and Albania) with the Mediterranean space (Greece, Cyprus) through regions with important contribution in the valorisation of transnational natural resources and cultural heritage in both land and sea.
