Mo.Na Project - Initiatives concerning the environmental-cultural management of the Santorini’s caldera

In the framework of Mo.Na Project, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades undertook activities, under the project “Management of the cultural and natural heritage of the Santorini’s caldera”, concerning the systematic recording, the photographic and bibliographic documentation as well as the identification of the monuments consisting the diachronic cultural wealth of Santorini's caldera. It should be pointed out that 57 points of interest have already been recorded in Thera, mainly churches of the Byzantine and Post Byzanitne period, while it should be mentioned that several prehistoric sites have also been incorporated into the list.
 
The above data are being used in this project, among other goals,  for the design of easy-level hiking trails connecting  several monuments in the broader existing touristic zone, promoting the cultural and natural wealth of the caldera, respecting their particular and unique character in order to make them approachable and attractive to the public. After the completion of the aforementioned activities, and in collaboration with the Municipality of Thera additional works will take place regarding vegetation clearance, consolidation, installation of the necessary informative signs wherever it is needed both at the hiking trails and at the viewpoints.
