Institute of Transport is a legal institution under the authority of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Telecommunications, specialized in performing Studies on road, railway, maritime and air transport. Institute of Transport is established on 1985. With an experience of twenty years old, the Institute of Transport main objective is to conduct and support the applied research activities in the field of transportation in Albania.

On the frame of recent programs undertaken by the Albanian Government for the reformation of the Research Institutions, the mission of IT is adopted in accordance with the demands of transport sector development in Albania.

At present, IT operates as “Service Unit” of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Telecommunications. IT new targets aim to achieve the new directives and objectives laid down in the Stabilization & Association Agreement following its endorsement by the Albanian Government on 12 June 2006.

The main mission of IT is to perform long-term and medium-term studies for transport system development.

The constant staffs of IT consists of 15 employers, qualified by different national and international training courses in the field of transport.

IT activates in different projects and studies, depending from the subject of the project, long experience collaborators in the transport field such as academics, and lectors from the Polytechnic University of Tirana. (In special cases the number of part-time collaborators activated is about 40).

In a lot of studies with foreign financements, implemented in the transport sector in Albania or Balkan Region, our Institute has collaborated with foreign consultants from European countries, such as Italy, Belgium, Holland, England, Switzerland, where are mentioned: T.E.C.N.I.C Consulting Engineers Rome, TEAM Group, Politecnic University of Trieste, ITECO, Transurb, GEM, NEA, ScottWilson&Krickpatrick, GIBB, etc.

Registered in the databases of some European Commission programmes such as INTERREG for regional and trans-national cooperation, FP7 Programme, Communitarian Programmes, etc., IT is in the stage of progressing with applications for participation as Local Partner in the European Programmes emphasizing the need to incorporate national research into international research.
