Lakatamia Municipality is a local authority of 45.000 inhabitants and covers a geographical area of 32 sq. km. It is located in the suburbs of Nicosia capital city in the island of Cyprus. Administratively it is made up of four parishes namely, Agia Paraskevi, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Mamas, Archangelos-Anthoupoli. The municipality has a political mandate on urban planning, construction and lighting of roads and bridges, construction of sewerage and treatment systems, waste collection and disposal, protecting and improving the environment, public health and food hygiene.

Our municipality is very active in providing services for citizens and runs an Office especially dedicated to Citizen Service, i.e. writing down suggestions and complaints and seeing that they are solved by the relevant departments such as Technical, Health or Financial Services. In addition, the municipality mans an Office for European Affairs which has been active carrying out information days to communicate to the public opportunities and incentives for employment as well as European Grants for youth entrepreneurship especially during the last 6 years of economic crises and severe unemployment.

We have strong links with the local Unemployment office and Employment Councillors. Several years ago the Municipality of Lakatamia has founded the Open School which provides both adult and youth education as well as the Multifunctional Centre which provides social care for the elderly in the mornings and takes care of children in the afternoons whose parents have to be at work.

Lakatamia Municipality also the last 9 years has been active carrying out information days to communicate to the public opportunities and incentives for employment, as well as grants for
youth entrepreneurship especially during the last 6 years of economic crisis and severe unemployment.

Other recent accomplishments include ISO certification of our administration as well as the signature of the Covenant of Mayors for reducing CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020.

In addition, Lakatamia Municipality has plenty of experience in EU funded projects. Related project was Green Partnerships that was funded under the MED programme which deals with exchanging best practices in energy efficiency. Through Elih Med – also a MED funded project, Lakatamia was able to co-finance the upgrading of housing of low income families in the City. Furthermore, Lakatamia Municipality is a signatory in the Covenant of Mayors and has been implementing a Sustainable Energy Action Plan for a few years now. Recently it has also joined Mayors Adapt initiative. In practice we have recently installed solar panels on the municipal building to save on electricity and drawn up a feasibility study for heating up municipal pool water with woodchips. These are only some examples of our smart green energy policy in the city. Currently we are running an Integer – Med program “COMPOSE”, a Life Program “LIFE UrbanProof”.

Starting programs September 2017 are: (1) "Cooperation on Energy Saving in Public Buildings of the Cross-Border Arc of Greece in Cyprus" Protocol Number "1289 / 08-04-2016", Project acronym "SYNERGINE" and (2) Project title : “Energy management competition for local authorities for uptake and enhance of Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans”, Project acronym COMPETE4SECAP, under Horizon 2020.

Other EU-Funded projects are related to e-government, (namely open wind) funded by ENPI CBC MED), and Integration Programmes for TCNs by Local Authorities called “New channels for the integration of Third Country Nationals in the Local Community”.
